Trailer Hitch Class Comparison

Have you asked yourself, what trailer hitch class do I need? Well we made a simple guide to help you determine which class of hitch is right for your vehicle and trailer.

When selecting a trailer hitch you must consider (1) the vehicle you're using and (2) what will you be towing. For certain vehicles you can install more than one class of hitch so it's important you make the right selection. Luckily our hitch search results will show you what options you have and whether more than one class is available for your vehicle. All you need to know is the weight of what you're carrying, also known as Weight Carrying (WC). This includes the weight of the trailer and the cargo on/in it.

If you're still unsure, don't hesitate to call us at (800) 300-4067 and we'll be glad to go over this with you, step by step and make sure you have a safe journey to your next destination!!

Hi Amanda, Without knowing which adapter they've used it's hard to give you any exact weight capacities, but I can let you know both of our 1 1/4" adapters do note that it reduces your hitch receivers capacity by 50%. Class 1 hitches generally only have a 200lb tongue weight so this would drastically affect what you can carry. We'd recommend contacting Kia again and get them to give you all the specifics on the hitch and adapter they used so you can know exactly how much you can carry. If we can help in any way please let us know - info@hitchweb.com or call 1-800-300-4067 Thank you! Hitchweb Team

Hi. I have a 2010 kia rondo v6. I asked my dealership to put a 2" hitch receiver on my car. Instead they put a class 1 1 1/4" with a 2" adapter. I am currently installing a 30 lb cargo carrier and carrying a 123 lb round boat (an ultraskiff in case you are wondering how a cargo carrier is carrying a boat) but in the future might want to carry more weight. My concern is that i am going to be limited in my options. Do you know what weight i can carry with a class 1 receiver and 2" adapter.

Hi Mike! Our two main suppliers are Curt and Draw-Tite and as far as quality goes both brands are an excellent choice. Curt currently has a listing for part # 13115 which has a limited lifetime warranty but Draw-Tite does not have a listing at this time. All of our class 2 hitches do come with an 1 1/4" receiver so we'd recommend sticking with a class 3 hitch with a 2" receiver. This will give you a much greater selection of hitch accessories - bike racks & cargo baskets would be the most popular. If we can help with anything else please let us know! You can call us at 1-800-300-4067 or email info@hitchweb.com Thank you!

Installing a class 3 hitch, 2" receiver, on a 2017 Kia Sedona LX, Any benefits of one manufacturer over another, which one tucks up the best? I'll only be towing a max of 3500 lbs, so technically I need only a class 2 but prefer the 2" receiver. Or do they make class 2's with 2" receivers.

Hi Larry, After taking a look at the install on the available hitches it looks like both the Curt and the Draw-Tite (Reese has recently been rebranded to Draw-Tite) both have hitches that will be visible. Due to the bumper design you'll still be able to see the crossbar of the hitch and receiver tube at the rear of the vehicle, and the rest of the hitch would remain hidden. Below are links to the Curt and Draw-Tite option - if you have any questions please feel free to contact us at sales@hitchweb.com or 1-800-300-4067 - Thanks! Hi Dean! Well first, it's worth checking whether your vehicle is already equipped with a tow package. If it doesn't have the tow package, refer to our trailer wiring for vehicles page.

Hope this helps, let us know if you're looking for anything else.
